Origin of Oregon Taxpayers United
Oregon Taxpayers United has been the leading taxpayer organization in the state of Oregon since 1993, but for the past three or more years has been under vicious attack by the public employee unions, especially the teachers unions. Our political committee has been ordered by a liberal Multnomah County judge to pay two teachers unions approximately $4 million in a case which is on appeal. Our executive director, Bill Sizemore, also has been ordered to pay the unions the same amount, and he never received so much as a trial. Apparently, there is no justice or constitutional protections for a real conservative in Multnomah County.
Recently, the judge who has been handling the case for the past three years admitted that he has been hiding a conflict of interest. His son was just elected the head of the teachers union in Woodburn, Oregon. Funny that he never thought to mention the fact that his son is a member of and activist in the same organization that was suing us in his courtroom.
On September 20th, the Oregon Court of Appeals heard the appeal of the teachers union case against OTU. One of the areas the judges seemed expecially interested in was Judge's LaBarre's injunction restricting Bill Sizemore's personal political activity. They wondered outloud how such an injunction against constitutionally protected free speech could be legal and not prior restraint of political speech. Bill Sizemore, who was not even a party to the case, has decided that the injunction cannot limit his personal political activities and has begun collecting signatures to place a measure on the ballot for 2006.
